The Maldives has a tropical climate, which means warm temperatures throughout the year, high humidity, and plenty of sunshine. Daytime temperatures typically range between 28–32°C, with sea temperatures staying consistently warm and comfortable for swimming in every season. There is no winter here — only subtle seasonal shifts influenced by monsoon winds.
The year is broadly divided into two seasons. The northeast monsoon (approximately December to April) is generally drier, with calmer seas and clearer skies. These months are popular for travel due to more predictable sunshine and smooth ocean conditions.
The southwest monsoon (approximately May to October) brings increased humidity, occasional tropical showers, and slightly rougher seas. However, “rainy season” in the Maldives rarely means continuous rain. Showers are often short and intense, followed by sunshine. This season can also bring dramatic skies, vibrant sunsets, and excellent marine life encounters due to plankton-rich waters.
Weather can vary between northern and southern atolls, and conditions shift quickly in island environments. Part of travelling in the Maldives is understanding that nature sets the rhythm. Sunshine is abundant year-round — and even in wetter months, there are long stretches of clear, bright days.
For most travellers, the Maldives is truly a year-round destination. The difference lies less in temperature and more in sea conditions, visibility for diving, and overall atmosphere.
