Swim with Ocean Giants in Mahibadhoo

Swim with whale sharks, live the rhythm of the island
SCROLL

Overview of the Journey

Set in the turquoise waters of South Ari Atoll, this journey blends extraordinary ocean encounters with the warmth of island hospitality.

Based on the local island of Mahibadhoo, you’ll be welcomed by hosts whose stories, laughter, and deep knowledge of the ocean shape the experience from the moment you arrive. Their easy warmth and genuine hospitality turn every excursion into something personal — the kind of connection that guarantees you’ll leave with a smile.

Days unfold out on the water, exploring one of the most remarkable marine environments in the Indian Ocean. Swim alongside whale sharks, the gentle giants of South Ari’s protected waters, and learn about their migration, behavior, and the conservation efforts that protect them.

Travel by boat to nearby islands, including Dhigurah, famous for its impossibly long stretch of sandbank that disappears into the sea like a ribbon of white sand. Snorkel coral reefs alive with marine life, spend time on quiet sandbanks surrounded by endless turquoise lagoon, and experience the rhythm of island life in between ocean adventures.

This is a journey shaped by the sea — by the people who know it best, the wildlife that calls it home, and the unforgettable moments that happen when you slow down and let the ocean lead the way.

DAY BY DAY ITINERARY

Follow the curated rhythm of this escape — each day layered with experiences, rest, and slow- living moments.

Day 1 — Arrival & Sandbank Sunset

Meals: Dinner

Your journey begins in Malé, where the Indian Ocean stretches endlessly beyond the runway.

A short domestic flight carries you south to Maamigili, revealing coral atolls and lagoons glowing in shades of turquoise below. From there, a speedboat brings you to Mahibadhoo, a lived-in island community in South Ari Atoll.

After settling into your family-run guesthouse, the afternoon is yours to ease into island rhythm — a harbor walk, a first swim, or simply watching daily life unfold.

As the sun begins to dip, we head out to a secluded sandbank.

Here, surrounded by nothing but open sea, dinner is prepared over open flames — freshly grilled seafood, tropical fruits, and the quiet sound of waves.

As darkness falls, the sky fills with stars.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The day begins early, with a light breakfast before heading into the open waters of South Ari Marine Protected Area.

This region is one of the few places on Earth where whale sharks can be seen year-round.

Slip into the water and swim alongside these gentle giants as they glide through the deep blue — an unforgettable moment shared with one of the ocean’s most magnificent creatures.

Later, we pause at a nearby sandbank for a picnic lunch — grilled fish, tropical fruits, and coconut water enjoyed with endless ocean views.

The afternoon continues with reef snorkelling, where coral gardens host turtles, rays, parrotfish, and thousands of reef species.

By late afternoon, we return to Mahibadhoo, where the evening settles into a relaxed island dinner.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Morning begins slowly.

Breakfast includes local favorites — mas huni, roshi flatbread, and fresh fruit.

A guided walk through Mahibadhoo reveals the everyday rhythm of island life: the harbor where fishing boats arrive, neighborhood cafés, quiet residential streets, and the community mosque.

Later, step into the colors of tradition during a Maldivian libaas experience, wearing the embroidered dress worn during island celebrations.

The afternoon moves into the island kitchen, where a hands-on cooking session introduces you to Maldivian food traditions.

Together you prepare:

  • Mas huni — tuna, coconut, chili and onion
  • Garudhiya — fragrant fish broth served with rice
  • Kulhi boakiba — spiced tuna cake
  • Bondi — sweet coconut dessert

The meal you cook becomes dinner — shared together.

As sunset arrives, the lagoon invites a final swim or a quiet paddle.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast, we leave Mahibadhoo behind and travel by boat to a remote uninhabited island.

Here the Maldives feels untouched.

White sand beaches stretch endlessly around the island, surrounded by luminous turquoise lagoon.

Beachfront glamping tents await beneath swaying palms.

The afternoon unfolds slowly:

  • Snorkelling the island reef
  • Swimming in clear lagoons
  • Beach walks and shell collecting
  • Hammock time beneath coconut trees

As sunset paints the horizon, dinner is prepared over an open fire.

A beach BBQ feast of lobster, reef fish, grilled vegetables, and tropical fruits is served directly on the sand.

Later, gather around a small campfire for stories and stargazing, where the night sky feels impossibly close.

Sleep comes easily to the sound of waves.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Morning begins with sunrise over the lagoon.

A relaxed beach breakfast is served before the morning is spent swimming, snorkelling, or simply enjoying the quiet of the island.

By afternoon, we return to Mahibadhoo.

The rest of the day is unhurried — beach walks, cafés, or resting beneath palms.

Evening arrives gently, bringing another relaxed island dinner.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

The morning is yours to experience Mahibadhoo at your own pace.

Later in the afternoon, we head out on the water for a traditional Maldivian fishing trip.

Using handlines — a technique passed down through generations — you’ll learn how islanders have sustainably fished these waters for centuries.

As the sun sets over the ocean, your catch is brought back to shore.

That evening, it becomes dinner — grilled fresh over open flame.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Your final full day unfolds slowly.

Swim in the lagoon, snorkel the reef, explore village streets, or simply rest on the beach.

Optional experiences — diving, paddleboarding, or sandbank trips — are available for those who want one last adventure.

As evening arrives, we gather for a farewell dinner by the sea, celebrating a week shaped by ocean encounters, island culture, and slow travel.

After breakfast, transfer by speedboat to Maamigili Airport, followed by a domestic flight back to Malé. For travelers continuing their journey, we can arrange resort stays, guesthouse extensions, or private island experiences.

Mahibadhoo is a local island in South Ari Atoll, about 30 minutes by domestic flight from Malé followed by a short speedboat transfer. The area is famous for its rich marine life and is one of the best places in the world to see whale sharks year-round.

After arriving at Velana International Airport (Malé), you’ll take a domestic flight to Maamigili Airport (about 30 minutes). From there, a speedboat transfer of about 20 minutes brings you to Mahibadhoo.
Our team will arrange and coordinate all transfers for you.

Not necessarily. For snorkeling trips, life jackets are provided, and guides are always present in the water and on the boat.
However, being comfortable in the water will help you enjoy the experiences more.

South Ari Atoll is known for its incredible biodiversity. During excursions you may see:

  • Whale sharks
  • Manta rays
  • Sea turtles
  • Reef sharks
  • Rays
  • Parrotfish and reef fish
  • Colorful coral gardens

While sightings can never be guaranteed, the area has one of the highest whale shark sighting rates in the Maldives.

Whale sharks live in South Ari Atoll year-round, which makes sightings highly likely. However, as these are wild animals, sightings can never be 100% guaranteed.

We recommend bringing:

  • Light summer clothing
  • Swimwear
  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Sunglasses and hat
  • Flip flops or sandals
  • Dry bag for boat trips
  • Underwater camera (optional)

Snorkeling equipment is provided.

Mahibadhoo is a local island community, so modest clothing is recommended when walking around the village. Swimwear is perfectly fine on designated tourist beaches and during excursions.
