Swim with Ocean Giants in Mahibadhoo

Swim with whale sharks, live the rhythm of the island
SCROLL

Overview of the Journey

Set in the turquoise waters of South Ari Atoll, this journey blends extraordinary ocean encounters with the warmth of genuine island hospitality. Based on the local island of Mahibadhoo, you will be welcomed by hosts whose stories, laughter, and deep knowledge of the ocean shape the experience from the moment you arrive. Days unfold out on the water, swimming alongside whale sharks in one of the few places in the world where they are present year-round, snorkelling coral reefs alive with marine life, and travelling by boat to nearby islands including Dhigurah, famous for its impossibly long sandbank that dissolves into the sea like a ribbon of white.

Between the ocean adventures, there is the quieter rhythm of island life. Sandbank lunches surrounded by open turquoise lagoon, evenings spent with hosts who know these waters better than anyone, and the kind of unhurried time that is harder to find than people expect. This is a journey shaped by the sea, by the people who know it best, and by the moments that tend to stay with you long after you have left.

DAY BY DAY ITINERARY

Follow the curated rhythm of this escape — each day layered with experiences, rest, and slow- living moments.

Day 1 — Arrival & Sandbank Sunset

Meals: Dinner

Your journey begins in Velana International Airport, where the Indian Ocean stretches endlessly beyond the runway. From there, a speedboat brings you to Mahibadhoo, a lived-in island community in South Ari Atoll.

After settling into your local family-run guesthouse, the afternoon is yours to ease into island rhythm with a harbor walk, a first swim, or simply watching daily life unfold.

The afternoon is yours:
a first swim in warm lagoon waters, a quiet walk along the harbour, or simply watching the gentle pace of everyday life unfold.

As evening arrives, we gather by the beach for your first night in Mahibadhoo.

Dinner is served under the open sky, with the sound of the ocean just steps away. The night unfolds with light beach games, conversation, and an easy sense of connection — a soft, welcoming start to the days ahead.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The day begins early, as we head into the open waters of South Ari Marine Protected Area.

This region is one of the few places on Earth where whale sharks can be seen year-round.

Slip into the water and swim alongside these gentle giants — an unforgettable moment shared with one of the ocean’s most magnificent creatures.

Later, we pause at a nearby sandbank for a picnic lunch.

The afternoon continues with reef snorkelling, where coral gardens are home to turtles, rays, parrotfish, and thousands of reef species.

By evening, we return to Mahibadhoo for a relaxed island dinner.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Morning begins slowly with local favourites — mas huni, roshi, and fresh fruit.

A guided walk through Mahibadhoo reveals the rhythm of everyday island life: fishing harbors, neighbourhood cafés, and quiet residential streets.

Step into tradition with a Maldivian libaas experience, wearing the embroidered dress worn during island celebrations.

In the afternoon, enter the island kitchen.

A hands-on cooking session introduces Maldivian food traditions, where you prepare dishes like:

  • Mas huni
  • Garudhiya
  • Kulhi boakiba
  • Bondi

The meal you create becomes dinner — shared together.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast, we leave Mahibadhoo behind and travel to a remote, uninhabited island.

Your castaway experience begins from 3PM, where beachfront glamping tents await beneath swaying palms.

The afternoon unfolds slowly:

  • Snorkelling untouched reefs
  • Swimming in clear lagoons
  • Beach walks and quiet moments under coconut trees

As sunset arrives, a beach BBQ is prepared over open flame — lobster, reef fish, grilled vegetables, and tropical fruits.

Later, gather around a small campfire under a sky full of stars.

Sleep to the sound of waves.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Wake to sunrise over the lagoon and enjoy a relaxed beach breakfast.

After breakfast, we leave the island and return to Mahibadhoo.

In the afternoon, connect with the island’s fishing heritage.

Meet traditional fishermen, who share:

  • Local fishing techniques
  • Stories from generations at sea
  • Insights into sustainable Maldivian practices

Late afternoon is yours:

  • Optional add-ons
  • Snorkelling or bikini beach time
  • Or simply slowing down into island life

Dinner is served back on the island.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Today, we journey to Dhigurah, one of the most unique islands in the Maldives.

Known for its extraordinarily long sandbank, Dhigurah stretches like a ribbon of white sand into endless blue.

Here, you’ll experience:

  • Walking along the iconic sandbank
  • Swimming in shallow crystal-clear lagoons
  • Snorkelling vibrant reef edges

The island offers a glimpse into another local community and its rhythm.

We return to Mahibadhoo by sunset.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Begin the day with a meaningful ocean experience.

Join a coral planting session, contributing to reef restoration.

Optional Add-on:
Plant your own coral fragment and have your name placed on the base — a living memory that continues to grow beneath the ocean.

The afternoon is slow and reflective:

  • Explore the cultural area developed by the island council
  • Relax by the beach or snorkel the lagoon
  • Enjoy a traditional Maldivian high tea by the ocean

As evening falls, you gather by the sea for your farewell dinner.

A boduberu performance unfolds on the beach — drums echoing into the night, voices rising, the energy building as locals draw you into the circle.

A final night shaped by rhythm, connection, and the spirit of the island.

Meals: Breakfast. After breakfast, transfer by speedboat to Maamigili Airport, followed by your domestic flight back to Malé. For those who wish to continue their journey, resort extensions or additional island experiences can be arranged.
